Backlit Stone & Onyx in Toronto
Certain natural stones let light pass through them. Fabricated thin and lit from behind, they turn a fireplace, wall, or staircase detail into something you don’t see on every job — send us photos of the space and we’ll tell you honestly whether backlighting is realistic for it.

What Backlit Stone Actually Is
Not every stone works for this. The technique depends on translucency — light has to actually pass through the slab, which means it only works with certain materials cut thin enough, and it only reads well once you’ve seen it lit in the room it’s going into. Onyx is the material most people picture when they hear “backlit stone,” and it’s usually the most reliably translucent choice, but some quartzites, alabaster and a handful of marbles will also let light through depending on the slab.
The stone itself is only half the job. Behind it there’s a lightbox, an LED backlighting system, and a mounting structure that has to hold the slab safely — and all of that has to be planned before the slab is cut, not after. We fabricate and install backlit stone fireplace surrounds, feature walls, staircase details and countertops across Toronto and the GTA, working from our general stone fabrication and installation experience.
If you’re not sure whether a specific slab or space will backlight well, send us photos and we’ll give you a straight answer — not every stone or every wall is a good candidate.

Where Backlit Stone Gets Used
The most common places we fabricate and install backlit natural stone in Toronto and GTA homes.
A backlit fireplace surround or feature wall turns a fireplace into the room's obvious focal point.
Staircase details, niches and accent walls can be backlit the same way as a fireplace surround.
A backlit countertop edge or island panel is a smaller-scale way to use the same technique.
Stones That Can Be Backlit
General guidance on which materials are typically translucent enough for backlighting — the slab itself always needs to be checked before fabrication.
Onyx
The material most associated with backlighting, thanks to its natural translucency and dramatic veining.
Translucency varies slab to slab — always check the actual piece before committing.
Select Quartzites
Some quartzites let enough light through to backlight, though far fewer than onyx.
Not every quartzite works — this needs to be confirmed on the specific slab.
Alabaster & Select Marbles
Alabaster is naturally translucent; a smaller number of marbles will also backlight when cut thin.
Softer than onyx or quartzite — usually better suited to decorative features than countertops.

How a Backlit Stone Project Works
The same general process for a fireplace, wall, staircase or countertop — scope changes the details.
Check the Slab
We assess whether the specific stone you want is translucent enough to backlight well.
Plan the Lightbox
The LED system and mounting structure are planned before fabrication, not improvised after.
Fabricate & Install
The slab is cut to the thickness the lighting needs and installed on the prepared structure.
Test & Finish
The lighting is tested in the finished space before we call the job done.
