What Is Quartzite?
Quartzite is a natural stone formed when sandstone is subjected to intense heat and pressure deep underground, fusing quartz grains into a dense, crystalline structure. That geological process is what separates it from marble — a softer, calcium-based stone formed differently — and gives quartzite its high resistance to scratching, heat, and everyday wear. Quartzite and quartz are not the same material despite the similar names: quartz is engineered (crushed stone bound with resin), while quartzite is 100% natural stone, cut and finished from quarried slabs.
Quartzite vs. marble: marble is prized for its soft, classic veining but etches with acidic foods and scratches more easily. Quartzite offers similar visual character with meaningfully better resistance to heat and everyday kitchen use, though it still needs periodic sealing.
Quartzite vs. granite: both are extremely hard and durable. The real difference is aesthetic — granite typically has a more speckled, granular pattern, while quartzite more often shows the flowing veining associated with marble.
