What Is Engineered Quartz?
Quartz countertops are made by crushing natural quartz stone — one of the hardest common minerals — into fine particles, then binding it with resin under heat and pressure into a dense, non-porous slab. That’s the key difference from granite, marble, and quartzite, which are all cut directly from quarried stone rather than manufactured. Because it’s engineered, quartz comes in a much wider range of colours and patterns than natural stone allows, and the resin content means quartz doesn’t need periodic sealing — the surface resists staining from wine, oil, and acidic foods without any maintenance step.
Quartz vs. natural stone: granite and quartzite are both more heat-resistant than quartz — a quartz kitchen still needs a trivet for anything straight off the stove. What quartz gives up in heat resistance, it makes up for in consistency: every slab from the same batch looks the same. Marble has real character but scratches and etches easily; quartz resists both far better, without the natural veining of real marble. See our full quartz vs granite comparison for a more detailed breakdown.
Where Quartz Works Best
- ✓Kitchen countertops and islands: consistent colour matters, especially on a longer run or waterfall island
- ✓Bathroom vanities: the non-porous surface handles daily water and product exposure without sealing
- ✓High-traffic surfaces: resistance to staining suits busy households
- ✓Not recommended outdoors: direct sun can fade the resin — granite or porcelain are better choices for outdoor kitchens and BBQ surrounds
